Fan remved from power supply

Well I got tired of hearing my PSUs fan squeak all the time (it has a bad bearing) so I removed it...So far I haven't had any temperature issues but I have not run it for more that 5min we'll see. My idea was that in a PC the fan is used more to remove hot air from the case than to cool the power supply but please tell me if I'm wrong before I burn down the house:)

  1. I've changed fans quite a bit - fans are the noisiest components in a PC. It's probably OK, but keep an eye on it. it's a good idea to replace it if possible ( pcs have lots of 12v fans inside, any size is OK, and the ones inside PSUs are identical to the PC ones (and the one supplied in kits for reprap cooling). If it's too big, just screw it to the outside of the case.

  2. I wouldn't run a PC power supply without a fan. The fan cools both PC and PSU. There are 'fanless' PSUs but they have special circuit designs, heatpipes for the high heat output components, and heavy finned aluminium cases. They still need some air moving over them to avoid overheating.

You may get away with it for a while but I don't think it is either reliable or safe.
